A release promises to shake Microsoft´s Web server software. The British company Zeus is to announce a product that has as main task to enhance the security of the Microsoft´s product or even replace it.

The British company Zeus Technology announced a few days ago the launch of Zeus Web Server Version 4.0, which will be available today.

The program allows twice as many people to access a web site at the same time, and over a continued period, compared with competitive products. This is because it can handle more simultaneous connections from the Internet, and responds to each individual connection much faster than competitors. This allows the number of hardware servers to be halved. Besides, the company says this is the world's fastest web server when delivering dynamic content such as PHP, 45% faster than the competition. This version 4.0 has been optimised for traffic travelling in both directions, making it the only web server designed for the next generation of the Internet.

Adam Twiss, CEO of Zeus Technology comments, "Given the current economic climate, it is more important than ever to extract the maximum return on investment in hardware. Zeus Technology has recognised the need for scalable, high-performance software which significantly reduces companies' overheads".

Zeus said it recognizes the trends to more personal, dynamic content generation technologies such as CGI, FastCGI, PHP, and Java Servlets. The server supports developers who choose these technologies and use Zeus' new FastCGI/PHP interface. Java performance is also enhanced with the support of AJPv13 protocol and new native interfaces for Tomcat and Jserv for further enhanced stability and performance.

Zeus is going to take advantage of this particularly sensitive time for Microsoft´s Internet Information Server software, which is buried up to head in critics. A number of viruses and other threats have been taking over the IIS as easily as eating a candy.

Besides Zeus, Sun is also trying to take advantage of the moment by cutting prices of its iPlanet Web server software.

Zeus Web Server Version 4.0 will be available from 23rd October 2001. For a free 30 day evaluation see Zeus website - Downloads.
