New handheld to run Windows, Linux, Unix
UPDATED A company called
Tiqit Computers should introduce next week at CeBIT a
new and quite curious product. Tiqit says this will be
the first handheld to run Windows, Linux or Unix operating
systems. Called eightythree, the new device works as a
desktop but can be used on the go.
Tiqit Computers will announce at CeBIT a computer that
acts as both a handheld and a Windows/Linux/UNIX PC, which
is quite a landmark.

As many must think, the company hurries in saying
the eightythree is not a concept product. It is
actually a fully functioning x86 handheld designed
for enterprise use. As amazing as it may seem, the
eightythree is said to be able to use all of the
software and hardware extensions currently available
in PCs.
Measuring 5.4" x 4" x 1.1" and weighing
20 ounces, the eightythree is set to bring laptop-quality
screen resolution, SMS keyboard, thumb-operated
micro joystick with mouse buttons, touchscreen,
a cardbus PC card slot to support all standard wireless
modems, a USB port, a Secure Digital (SD) slot and
internal speaker.

It is possible to connect the device to peripherals such
as digital cameras and bar code scanners. The applications
available range from voice communication, e-mail and web
access to PIM, enterprise apps and the ability to download
attachments. The handheld's CPU is the National Semiconductor
Geode, 266-300 MHz, RAM is 128MB or 256MB, and there is
a 10GB hard drive.
"This product will greatly accelerate adoption
and use of handhelds in the enterprise," said
Ian Blasch, CEO, Tiqit Computers. "It uses standard
operating systems Windows XP, Linux or UNIX and is compatible
with all associated applications, including legacy software.
Almost anything you can do on a laptop or PC, you can
do on eightythree, only it is smaller and more mobile."
The CeBIT in Hannover will happen from 13 to 20 of March.
Other companies that should show new products at the German
event, include: Corel (with Mac OS and Windows versions
of Painter 7, KPT effects and KnockOut 2, among others),
Philips with new computer peripherals, ABIT, Soyo,
AOpen, Canon, Daewoo, Cassio, ECS, Chaintech, Fujitsu
Siemens, Compaq and tons of others.
